Trans and Queer - Affirming EMDR in San Diego, CA
Trauma-Informed EMDR Therapy to connect to your full self for residents of San Diego
You’re tired of struggling with all the things: relationships not working out, feeling like too much or too complicated for people to understand you, and wishing that you couldget over a sexual assault that haunts you, even though it was years ago.
You don’t have to fall deeper into depression or struggle with stressful flash backs when you are trying to get close to someone new. You don’t have to spend energy worrying before trying that new experience.
What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR can help you heal from your pain. According to the EMDR International Association, “Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders.”
With the help of EMDR, your body can process what happened back. so when you start that new relationship, you can be present with your new hookup or new love. You’ll feel lighter and more at ease with yourself. Your confidence will emerge. You’ll know deep down that you are loveable and likable and that you know that you are happy with yourself. You’ll find yourself looking forward to new experiences with excitement.

Our EMDR Therapists Can Help
Creating Safe Spaces: LGBTQ+ Affirming EMDR Therapy
We are trans and queer-affirming therapists. We are polyamory and kink = affirming and knowledgeable. Our team are religious-friendly therapists who are also atheist and agnostic-affirming. We appreciate puns and moments of laughter even as we work through tough spots.
For several years, we have worked with people exploring their identities, dealing with the stress of coming out and coming into themselves, and all the feelings that go along with these journeys.
We are trauma-informed therapists who are quite experienced in helping people heal from all sorts of difficult and unwanted experiences,
Some experiences include car crashes, sexual assaults, wrestling with one’s identity, and living in the USA while being queer and trans.
Navigating Painful Conversations: Addressing Racism and Structural Inequities
We are comfortable talking about the painful stuff, like race and the history of structural racism in the USA and around the world and the need to be seen, heard, and helped by a somewhat unrelentingly difficult and unequipped mental and physical health care system. We are guided by our empathy, ethics, and determination to help our clients heal in the most LGBTQ+ - affirming and helpful ways possible.
We will use EMDR techniques to support your growth and healing. Therapy can be a place of respite and a place to figure yourself out with a supportive and helpful therapist collaborating with you to help you embody your full self.
The Waves’ Approach to EMDR
Waves help clients mindfully go through an individualized 8-phase journey of EMDR. We focus on the symptoms and topics on which clients want to focus. We are sticklers for using our training in respectful ways that are in line with our values. We integrate Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy techniques into our EMDR work when appropriate, taking particular care in helping clients connect with their bodies.
We check in with clients often about their experiences and reiterate the importance of the client consenting to continue the pace timing and work of treatment as we move through each phase of EMDR.
