This course is an introduction to working with trans adults and teens. Dr. Weissman addresses how to respectfully work with trans clients, binary and non-binary. This course is perfect for the clinician who has never worked with a trans client and doesn’t know what to do if a trans client shares their identity during the first meeting or discloses their identity well into their working relationship. Dr. Weissman will describe terms to use and appropriate questions to ask their clients. Dr. Weissman will review vocabulary, common reasons a trans client might be looking for therapy, examples of community stressors, legacy of psychologists gatekeeping their clients and ways that therapists can provide a trans-affirming, supportive and meaningful environment and therapeutic relationship for their clients. This course will focus mainly on working with teens and adults but material will also be applicable to working with children and their parents/caregivers.
